Jr Sail Program

MRYC Junior Sail Program

Welcome to the Miles River Yacht Club Junior Sail program! Our program
is for kids 6 to 18 years old with instruction for beginning,
intermediate, and experienced sailors. Our primary training boat is
the Optimist dinghy. The "Opti" is a world-class training boat. See
the Opti website at http://www.optiworld.org for more information. We
also use the Club 420 as our double-handed boat for older students.
This is great because the C420 is the basis of most of the high school
and collegiate sailing programs. Find out more about the C420 on their
website at https://club420.org/ .

We are in our 9th year being certified Maryland State camp, but we
have been teaching sailing to kids for over 30 years. Being a
certified State Camp means that we meet the standards required by the
State including health, safety, staff qualifications,
instructor/student ratios, and we successfully pass yearly unscheduled
inspections. We are providing a fun, safe, and educational environment
for your children!

Our program includes multiple full-day sessions which run from
mid-June to the beginning of August. You can sign up for as many
sessions as fit your schedule. Each day includes a lunch break and
swimming break.

All of our coaches are highly qualified and we enjoy a low student to
instructor ratio. Most of our instructors are certified by US Sailing
to teach while all have come up through junior, High School, or
college sailing programs.

There are many opportunities for students to participate in regattas
if they choose. One major regatta is held at Miles River, the MRYC
Junior Regatta, near the end of the summer. The Racing Team of sailors
travels around the Bay to different venues over the summer creating a
close bond among team members. For more advanced students not
interested in competition, we also have other classes where they can
explore longer cruises, big boat experiences, and instruction on
navigation and electronics.

The Club has a limited number of boats for use in the program and
these generally are reserved for beginners. Students that have
progressed into racing are encouraged to bring their own boats.
